Description
Since 1996, the Department of Anthropology at NMNH has received a series of clinical CT scanners donated by Siemens Healthcare and Corporation, resulting from a 20-year relationship originally developed by Dr. Don Ortner and Dr. Bruno Frohlich. These instruments have allowed for convenient and low-cost analyses of thousands of objects and specimens from SI collections, ranging from great apes to violins to space suits. In 2015, the CT facility at NMNH was established as the Smithsonian Institution Bio-Imaging Research (SIBIR) Center, which continues to increase and diffuse scientific knowledge through tomographic imaging and analysis of SI collections and beyond.
